One of the most frequent questions I am asked by both students and professional dancers is “should I compete in a competition?” There are several things to take into consideration.
- Study the competition rules.
- Are you competing as a soloist or a couple?
- Will your partner also be competing or entering as a non competing partner
When preparing a classical variation, please make sure that it is a legitimate version that will be acceptable by the judges and not one choreographed by your teacher. The music must fit into the time frame set by the competition. Each one has different rules.

You are always asked to do a Contemporary piece. If you are thinking of performing an existing piece of choreography, the rights must be cleared with the choreographer, otherwise you will be disqualified.
Over the years, the importance of competitions, have changed regarding a professional career. What is your incentive to enter? Is it coming from you, your teacher or your parents? The age bracket you will be competing in is important for the end result.
Please take into consideration the expense of entering a competiton
Coaching is of most importance
Renting a rehearsal space is costly
Transportation to the competition
Housing is not always provided by the organizers
Cost of costumes and pointe shoes
I have always felt that entering a competition is a learning experience and it is not always about winning. I also feel that “if you give in life, you win.”
