February 2007 - About auditioning |

I would like to introduce myself having known Yumiko for many years. I was recently in Dresden and had the pleasure of working with Yumiko every day for three weeks. The company was preparing Balanchine's Theme And Variations staged by another old pal of mine, Patricia Neary. We had not seen each other since the 70's so there was much to catch up on.

I want to talk a little bit about auditioning which is a constant question that I am asked on every continent that I visit. Let's talk about America.
Make sure that you have current information on the companies that you want to audition for. Most companies have a varied repertoire, going from classical to neo-classic, contempory, modern and especially in America, often jazz.
Working in America has many problems, like every other country because of the visa situation. Each state has different rules regarding the quota of foreigners. So, if you apply for a company don't get upset if they tell you that they have no vacancies because it could be diffculty for the management to obtain a visa for you.
